Movie Posters Photography Project
Hey! I took a photography course this past semester and my final project pitch was to do movie posters as a self portrait series. The most fun I had in this project was exploring different design tendencies across films of different regions and genres.
Since this was a self portrait series, I tried to have each poster allude to different aspects of my life! Throwing in little easter eggs that are specific to the people in my life was so much fun. Special shoutout to my instructor Valentina Aproda Maurer for the fun class and guidance for this semester!
Here’s my ripoff of Oldboy. One of my favorite martial arts films. Shoutout to Eunjee for the translation into Korean! And to my roommate Joey for modeling the hand and knife!
My Oscar-bait-A24 Coming of age film about being Cambodian in Long Beach. Pink donut boxes are a staple of Cambodian owned donut shops, I wanted to honor it in a funny way. Funnily enough, I went to my local Cambodian owned donut shop for a pink box, but they only had a white one, just had to tint it in photoshop.
My girlfriend loves K/JDramas. Thought it would be fun to reinterpret our relationship as one. I asked my friend Kyoichi, who reads and writes Japanese, for a localization of the title. The direct translation of the kanji means “red string cup phone.” I loved the illusion to the red string of fate and the childlike nature of the cup phone, thought it was such a cute title! It could be a very real possibility that he is trolling me and it means something completely different though.
The housemates! But as a 70’s East Coast Italian mob flick.
I like Wu-Tang. And Martial Arts. I stole this design idea from Kill Bill.
A biopic of my dad, a Khmer Rouge survivor that moved to our current home in Silicon Valley.
